Dog Story

Who's ready for a weird little story? Okay. I was feeling sort of feeble, the way I did before Ben crossed over. It might have been because of the wind which makes me feel tired and stupid. But I asked Ben if someone else was haunting me. He made a circle of little marks on the page. Evidently that was him marching around "being vigilant."
He finally reported that it was Meggie. My late dog. He said she had come to tell me she was fine. Everything is all right.
And I'm like "Really?"
And then Meggie says, "I'm here, Big." Turns out that Big was her name for me. (Certainly one I would not have chosen for myself.) It never occurred to me that dogs name us the way we name them.
We talked about some concerns I had including that I didn't have money to pay for a vet before she died. She assured me it had all turned out fine.
Finally I said, "Am I really talking to a dog?"
She said, "Your dog, Big. You rescued me and took me home and let me poop in your yard and play with Princess."
I asked if there was anything she wanted and she said, "I want to come back and be your little dog again."
I told her that I still couldn't afford vet bills and it wouldn't be right to adopt her if I couldn't afford to take care of her properly. I suggested maybe in my next life. Or later in this life if I come into some money.
She said, "I'll let you know. I'll see the right time."

After she left it occurred to me to wonder how she could have been talking to me in words.
  • Ben said,  She didn't talk in words, Donya. She talked in thoughts. And you think in words.  You translated her thoughts into words just like you do mine.
  • I said,  She called me Big.
  • Ben said,  You are big compared to her. She wasn't going to call you Scheherazade, was she?
  • He added,  Actually you are bigger than her former humans.  Her last guy was a short, mean, little old man.
  • Me:  With a cane, huh? She was afraid of Dad's cane when she first saw it.
  • Ben:  Is it any wonder she was happy to be with you?
